A taxi driver who prepared his own accounts and tax return was subject to an aggressive HMRC tax enquiry and approached us for advice. The situation wasn’t helped because of poor record keeping. We reviewed the case and pointed out how the tax inspector’s method was inappropriate and looked at the typical fares and journey length and vehicle running costs. We achieved a reduction of several thousand pounds in the tax assessed and also reduced the surcharges imposed by HMRC on our new client and also negotiated an arrangement to allow the client to pay the tax assessed over a period that was acceptable to him.
